- Name: Steve S.
- Program: Hotel & Resort Business Management
- Graduate: October 2006
- Employed: Service Advisor at a large Automotive Dealership
Steve was an automotive technician for 25 years until
he sustained a major back injury. Working with worker's
compensation he was sent to Vocational Rehabilitation for
testing and career counseling. Making the switch form the
physical aspect of employment to the managerial/desk job
would be a major change for him.
Steve was given ten career
options and after researching those options, he chose the
Hotel & Resort Business Management.
"As a technician,
I worked hard and understood physical exhaustion. As a student,
I studied hard and was surprised that I could be just as
exhausted after a day of classroom activities as I was when
I was a technician. I loved
learning new information and even enjoyed the reading class
I had to take."
When he graduated from Mid Florida Tech, he began his job search in local hotels. As he was passing a large automotive dealership, he stopped in to see if there were any opening in sales.
Once
the manager learned of his work history and his training
in business management, he sent Steve to the service department.
He spent eight months as a lube advisor and recently was
promoted to a service advisor.
The information and skills he obtained from the Hotel & Resort Business Management program is transferable to any business management position-customer service, problem solving, and listening skills.
Steve's advice to persons who find themselves injured and
unable to continue in their chosen career area is to take
advantage of every opportunity including going back to school,
you won't regret it."
