MISSION:
This program is committed to meeting and exceeding the needs of the industrial community by developing skilled technicians trained with the most current technologies, professionalism and leadership abilities.


DESCRIPTION:
Training includes maintaining and repairing diesel engines and electrical systems, maintaining and repairing basic hydraulic systems, overhauling diesel engines, performing preventative maintenance and repairing chassis of heavy trucks and buses. Communication and leadership skills, mathematical skills, human relations and employability skills, and safe and efficient work practices are included in the training. Instructors are ASE certified as medium and heavy truck technicians. The instruction, course of study, facilities, and equipment have been evaluated by the National Automotive Service Technicians Education Foundation (N.A.T.E.F.) and meets the Automotive Service Excellence Standards of Quality (ASE) for training. Student club activities may be an integral part of student learning in this program.


UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS:
Tools, safety shoes and CDL (Commercial Driver License) may be required for employment.  The State of Florida requires students to meet a basic skills requirement prior to program completion.  The basic skills grade levels for this program are: Mathematics 9.0, Language 9.0 and Reading 9.0

JOB TRAINING INCLUDES: Occupational Completion Points (OCP)
OCPs provide a student with early completion training options linked to employment opportunities established by the Florida Department of Education based on the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system and accepted industry titles.

Local employers have verified that the range of wages that can be reasonably expected by students who enter this field upon completion of the program is:

OCP A: Diesel Engine Mechanic/Technician Helper (Inclusive)
  • Identify shop organization, management, and safety requirements
  • Demonstrate shop and occupational safety, first aide and infection control procedures
  • Identify the basic diesel components and functions
  • Demonstrate the use of basic tools and equipment
  • Demonstrate workplace communication skills
  • Apply math skills to diesel technology tasks
  • Apply scientific principles common to diesel technology operations
  • Demonstrate employability skills for diesel technology occupations
  • Identify entrepreneurial opportunities in the diesel technology industry
  • Demonstrate shop and occupational safety procedures
  • Identify principles, assemblies, and systems of engine operation
  • Troubleshoot and repair engine systems
  • Rebuild a cylinder-head assembly
  • Remove and replace camshaft assemblies
  • Rebuild a block assembly
  • Demonstrate the qualifications for employment
OCP B: Diesel Electrical & Electronics Technician (270 Hours)
  • Demonstrate shop and occupational safety, first aide and infection control procedures
  • Identify and apply electrical principles related to diesel technology
  • Identify and apply electronic principles related to diesel technology
  • Maintain and repair electrical systems
  • Demonstrate the qualifications for employment
OCP C: Diesel Equipment Preventive Maintenance Technician (135 Hours)
  • Demonstrate shop and occupational safety, first aide and infection control procedures
  • Perform equipment preventive maintenance
  • Demonstrate the qualifications for employment

OCP D: Diesel Engine & Diagnostic Technician (270 Hours)
  • Demonstrate shop and occupational safety, first aide and infection control procedures
  • Perform engine overhaul
  • Demonstrate the qualifications for employment
OCP E: Diesel Brakes Technician (135 Hours)
  • Demonstrate shop and occupational safety, first aide and infection control procedures
  • Maintain and repair brake systems
  • Demonstrate the qualifications for employment
OCP F: Diesel Hydraulics Technician (135 Hours)
  • Demonstrate shop and occupational safety, first aide and infection control procedures
  • Maintain and repair hydraulic systems
  • Demonstrate the qualifications for employment
OCP G: Diesel Heating and Air-Conditioning Technician (135 Hours)
  • Demonstrate shop and occupational safety, first aide and infection control procedures
  • Maintain and repair air-conditioning and heating systems

OCP H: Diesel Steering and Suspension Technician (135 Hours)
  • Demonstrate shop and occupational safety, first aide and infection control procedures

OCP I: Diesel Drive train Technician (135 Hours)
