ROADWAY TECHNICIAN

MISSION:
Our mission is to train and empower men and women to develop to their fullest potential as Roadway Technicians with an accent on safety and proficiency.


DESCRIPTION:
This program focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understanding and demonstration of the following elements of the road maintenance industry:  planning, management, finance, technical and production skills, underlying principles of technology, labor issues, community issues and health, safety, and environmental issues.


UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS:

  • The State of Florida requires students to meet a basic skills requirement prior to program completion. The basic skills grade levels for this program are: Mathematics 9.0, Language 9.0, and Reading 9.0
  • The student must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have a valid driver’s license

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER:

JOB TRAINING INCLUDES: Occupational Completion Point (OCP)
OCPs provide a student with early completion training options linked to employment opportunities established by the Florida Department of Education based on the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system and accepted industry titles.

Local employers have verified that the range of wages that can be reasonably expected by students who enter this field upon completion of the program is:

OCP A:  Road Technician I (250 Hours)

  • Identify health and safety issues
  • Operate small equipment
  • Operate large equipment
  • Identify basic concrete roadway maintenance and repair methods
  • Identify basic asphalt roadway maintenance and repair methods
  • Identify human relations skills in the workplace
  • Identify health and safety issues
  • Perform basic carpentry skills

OCP B:  Roadway Technician II  (250 Hours)

  • Read blueprints and plans
  • Identify concrete roadway maintenance and repair methods
  • Identify asphalt roadway maintenance repair methods
  • Apply pavement management skills
  • Understand human relations skills in the workplace
  • Identify health and safety issues
  • Perform survey operations ·Perform survey operations
  • Identify brick and block roadway maintenance and repair methods
  • Identify and apply green space methods and skills
  • Understand emergency operational procedures
  • Identify leadership management skills and computers in the workplace
