PRE-APPRENTICESHIP

MISSION:
The mission of this program is to promote a better standard of living by development of healthy work ethics through assistance, encouragement, training and education.  To enable every person to achieve economic independence and to attain a quality of life to which they aspire, to become full partners with business and industry, and to prepare the necessary workforce for Florida's businesses to remain competitive in the global economy.


DESCRIPTION:
The program focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understanding and demonstration of the following elements of the Apprenticeship Industry: planning, management, finance, technical and product skills, underlying principles of technology, labor issues, community issues, and health, safety, and environmental issues.



UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Physically capable of performing trade work
  • Two forms of ID, one must be a Social Security card

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER:
All students are registered with the Department of Labor through the Department of Education. Upon completion of the Pre-Apprenticeship Program, the student meets the criteria to be interviewed by the Registered Apprenticeship Program.


JOB TRAINING INCLUDES: Occupational Completion Points (OCP)
OCPs provide a student with early completion training options linked to employment opportunities established by the Florida Department of Education based on the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system and accepted industry titles.

Local employers have verified that the range of wages that can be reasonably expected by students who enter this field upon completion of the program is:

From $14,000 annually to $20,000 annually
(Based on year-round, full-time employment)


OCP A:  Pre-Apprenticeship I (450 Hours)
  • Identify apprenticeable occupations
  • Identify and properly use subparts in OSHA Standards (1926)
  • Achieve safety certifications
  • Demonstrate appropriate communication skills ·Demonstrate and apply appropriate math and reading skills
  • Identify awareness of drugs and drug-free workplace
  • Use technology, tools, equipment and supplies safely and correctly
  • Read and interpret appropriate technical references and manuals
  • Apply designated occupational standards
  • Demonstrate and understanding of employability skills
  • Demonstrate an understanding of entrepreneurship
OCP B:  Pre-Apprenticeship II (450 Hours)
  • Demonstrate acquired skills through on-the job training
