PLUMBING TECHNOLOGY APPRENTICESHIP

MISSION:
The mission of the apprentice programs offered by the Orlando
Plumbers and Pipefitters Joint Apprenticeship Committee is
congruent with the mission of the institution and the occupational
needs of business served by the apprenticeship. The overall
objective is to produce the most highly skilled, competent
and productive journeymen craftsmen that can be developed.
DESCRIPTION:
Related training and on-the-job training are an integral part
of the program. These activities include instruction in the
use of safety procedures, tools, equipment, materials, and
processes found in the industry.
UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 18 years of age
- High School Diploma or GED
- Driver's license
- Social Security Card
- Birth certificate
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER:
All students are registered with the Department of Labor through
the Department of Education. Apprentices graduate as journeyman
plumbers, pipefitters, heating, ventilation and air conditioning
technicians, or maintenance repairers, receiving a certificate
of completion from the State of Florida Bureau of Apprenticeship
Training.
JOB TRAINING INCLUDES: Occupational Completion
Points (OCP)
OCPs provide a student with early completion training options
linked to employment opportunities established by the Florida
Department of Education based on the Standard Occupational Classification
(SOC) system and accepted industry titles.
Local employers have verified that the range of wages that can
be reasonably expected by students who enter this field upon completion
of the program is:
From $40,000 annually
to $80,000 annually
(Based on year-round,
full-time employment)
FIRST YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- an awareness of the United
Association and the contractor organizations
- instruction in
safe, efficient use and care of tools
- basic training in the
identification and installation requirements for various types
of pipe, fittings, valves, hangers, supports and fasteners;
jobsite safety
- soldering and brazing
- basic mathematical concepts
as they apply to the pipe trades
- oxy-acetylene torch operation
- basic rigging techniques and the ability to understand technical
and isometric drawings
SECOND YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- an introduction to science
as it relates to the piping industry
- the ability to understand
building plans and specifications
- instruction in basic electricity
as it applies to piping installations and training in shielded
metal arc welding
THIRD YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- knowledge and skills necessary
to install a complete potable water system
- knowledge and skills
necessary to install a complete sanitary, stormwater, vacuum
and graywater drainage system
- servicing and repairing of these
systems and advanced mathematical work
FOURTH YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- training in the types of
plumbing fixtures and how to rough-in and set them
- installation
of natural and LP gas systems
- principles and requirements
of state, local or provincial codes
- advanced plan reading
and a background in the field of service work, stressing special
installations, human relations, salesmanship and planning.
FIFTH YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- skills in advanced drawing
and coordination, sketching and sleeve drawings
- training in
the use of instruments used for piping systems layout
- the
understanding of medical gas systems and training required
to be certified as a qualified brazer/installer
- the understanding
of backflow prevention and cross-connection controls and training
to be a certified installer/tester, repair and maintenance
or surveys and inspections technician and the ability to design
and install the three fixture plumbing test module satisfactorily
- Courses in leadership development, computer operation, computer
aided drafting (CAD), high purity piping may be offered
