INDUSTRIAL PIPEFITTER APPRENTICESHIP

MISSION:
The mission of the apprentice programs offered by the Orlando
Plumbers and Pipefitters Joint Apprenticeship Committee is congruent
with the mission of the institution and the occupational needs
of business served by the apprenticeship.
DESCRIPTION:
Related training and on-the-job training are an integral part
of the program. These activities include instruction in the
use of safety procedures, tools, equipment, materials, and processes
found in the industry.
UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 18 years of age
- High School Diploma or GED
- Driver's license
- Social Security card
- Birth certificate
- The State of Florida requires students to meet basic skills
requirements prior to program completion
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER:
All students are registered with the Department of Labor through
the Department of Education. Apprentices graduate as Journeyman
plumbers, pipefitters, heating, ventilation and air conditioning
technicians, or maintenance repairers, receiving a completion
certificate from the State of Florida Bureau of Apprenticeship
Training.
JOB TRAINING INCLUDES: Occupational Completion
Points (OCP)
OCPs provide a student with early completion training options
linked to employment opportunities established by the Florida
Department of Education based on the Standard Occupational Classification
(SOC) system and accepted industry titles. Apprenticeship students
receive credit for one OCP for each year of training.
Local employers have verified that the range of wages that can
be reasonably expected by students who enter this field upon completion
of the program is:
From $50,000 annually to $100,000 annually
(Based on year-round, full-time employment)
FIRST YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- an awareness of the United Association and the contractor organizations
- instruction in safe, efficient use and care of tools
- basic
training in the identification and installation requirements
for various types of pipe, fittings, valves, hangers, supports
and fasteners
- jobsite safety
- soldering and brazing
- basic mathematical
concepts as they apply to the pipe trades
- oxy-acetylene torch
operation
- basic rigging techniques and the ability to understand
technical and isometric drawings
SECOND YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- an introduction to science
as it relates to the piping industry
- the ability to understand
building plans and specifications
- instruction in basic electricity
as it applies to piping installations and training in shielded
metal arc welding
THIRD YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- advanced instruction in
electrical theory as it applies to the industry
- knowledge
and skills necessary for the installation of steam systems
for space heating and process piping
- training in refrigeration
theory and installation practices
- instruction in hydronic
systems for heating and cooling
- understanding the safe handling
of refrigerants and refrigerant recovery practices and the
required training to be able to pass EPA certification examinations
FOURTH YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- training in air conditioning
theory and installation practices
- training needed to pass
additional EPA certification examinations
- the understanding
of valve repair practices and training to be certified in valve
repair
- preparation for arc welding certification test
- advanced
plan reading and basic knowledge of pneumatic controls
FIFTH YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- an introduction to advanced
welding techniques (MIG, GTAW/TIG, orbital)
- training in electrical
controls and diagrams
- an introduction to instrumentation and
process control
- basic courses in pipe bending
- training in
the use of the instruments used for piping systems layout
- introduction to the start, test and balance procedures
- basic
knowledge of industrial and power piping systems
