MISSION:
The mission statement of the Heavy Equipment Operators/Operating Engineers is to develop a more efficient crafts person able to meet the demands of current industry standards.


DESCRIPTION:
The content includes, but is not limited to, communication skills, leadership skills, human relations, employability skills, safe and efficient work practices, and skills to operate and maintain a variety of heavy equipment such as Cranes, Dozer, Forktruck, Grader, Backhoe, and other related equipment.



UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Physically capable of performing trade work
  • Have a valid Florida driver's license
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Have a Birth certificate
  • Provide a Social Security card
  • Have two letters of recommendation
  • The State of Florida requires students to meet basic skills requirements prior to program completion

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER:
Upon completion of the program, the student becomes a journeyman in the trade.


JOB TRAINING INCLUDES: Occupational Completion Points (OCP)
OCPs provide a student with early completion training options linked to employment opportunities established by the Florida Department of Education based on the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system and accepted industry titles.

Local employers have verified that the range of wages that can be reasonably expected by students who enter this field upon completion of the program is:

From $20,000 annually to $35,000 annually
(Based on year-round, full-time employment)


FIRST YEAR: Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician
  • Demonstrate understanding of procedures
  • Demonstrate understanding of operation and maintenance of mechanical systems and engines
  • Demonstrate appropriate communication skills
  • Demonstrate employability skills
  • Demonstrate an understanding of entrepreneurship
SECOND YEAR: Tractor Operator
  • Operate pneumatic and crawler type tractor with attachments
  • Demonstrate appropriate math skills
  • Demonstrate appropriate understanding of basic science
THIRD YEAR: Off Road Equipment Operator
  • Operate a back hoe
  • Operate a motor grader
  • Utilize utility construction equipment as applicable
FOURTH YEAR: Crane Operator
  • Operate a crane
