MISSION:
Our mission is to prepare students for employment or advanced
training in fire sprinkler occupations through on-the-job
training and related classroom instruction. The apprenticeship program
provides expert craft people that adhere to the demands of current
industry standards.
DESCRIPTION:
Classroom, shop and laboratory activities are an integral part
of the program. These activities include instruction in the
use of safety procedures, tools, equipment, materials, and processes
found in the industry. Equipment and supplies should be provided
to enhance hands-on experiences for students in the chosen occupation.
Books, tools, etc., may be required for the program.
UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 18 years of age
- Have a high school diploma/GED
- DD-214 where applicable
- Birth certificate
- Record of previous employment where applicable
- The State of Florida requires students
to meet a basic skills requirement prior to program completion.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER:
When they complete the training program, the apprentices are
advanced to "Journeyman" status.
JOB TRAINING INCLUDES: Occupational Completion
Points (OCP)
OCPs provide a student with early completion training options
linked to employment opportunities established by the Florida
Department of Education based on the Standard Occupational Classification
(SOC) system and accepted industry titles.
Local employers have verified that the range of wages that can
be reasonably expected by students who enter this field upon completion
of the program is:
From $36,200 annually to $50,000 annually
(Based on year-round, full-time employment)
FIRST YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- an awareness of the United Association
and the contractor organizations
- instruction in safe, efficient
use and care of tools
- basic training in the identification
and installation requirements for various types of pipe, fittings,
valves, hangers, supports and fasteners
- jobsite safety
- soldering
and brazing
- basic mathematical concepts as they apply to the
pipe trades
- oxy-acetylene torch operation
- basic rigging techniques
and the ability to understand technical and isometric drawings
SECOND YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- an introduction to science
as it relates to the piping industry
- the ability to understand
building plans and specifications
- instruction in basic electricity
as it applies to piping installations
- training in shielded
metal arc welding
THIRD YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- an introduction to the installation
of automatic sprinkler systems
- training in reading automatic
sprinkler piping drawings
- the ability to do system calculations
- working knowledge of sprinkler head technology
FOURTH YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- advance blueprint reading
skills
- understanding of the sprinkler system water supply
using hydraulic calculations and the need for backflow prevention
devices
- knowledge of the various types of fire protection
systems and the alarms that accompany them
FIFTH YEAR
Will provide the apprentice with:
- a technical course in special
application sprinkler systems
- a working knowledge of the economics
of the sprinkler industry
- training in the art and science
of human relations
- the ability to fill out and interpret
technical reports
